REGALO
In 1997, the year I was born, my grandpa Luis was gifted a horse, a horse with no name. This nameless gift would be known as Regalo.
Due to my grandpa's age and moving at a different pace, he was faced with the reality of having to find a new home for Regalo. My first time walking to the back of his ranch and not seeing Regalo, transported me to 2019, taking my first steps around my grandpa Pablos rancho after he had passed away.
The stillness, accompanied by the sound of roosters, dogs barking, birds chirping, and the wind singing through the fruit trees felt familiar. I knew that this marked the beginning of yet another big transition
Regalo is a way to honor the vibrant ranch and agricultural scene of Muscoy, CA - more specifically my family's ranchos. They serve as a space of resource, community, care, and sustenance. None of which could be done without the time, knowledge, skill sharing, and people that it takes to tend to and maintain a lifestyle; this gift carried from Mexico.
